Photo Story: From Susquehanna to City Hall

February 9, 2010 by gbenigno

The Beginning of an Adventure from Susquehanna to Center City.

A passenger patiently waits to board the incoming train.

Train 552 leaves Susquehanna Station.

A diverse mix of passengers pass the time.

Once the train departs, the station is left hollow.

Beyond these steps lies City Hall.

This way to Center City!

A much different view compared to North Philadelphia.

Adventure accomplished.

The Barber Shop where my son, Jerrett, got is haircut.

This is the “Before” picture to show how much hair Jerrett had, and that he did not enjoy being there.

This is the barber trimming around the ears while Jerrett was moving around. He had to be extra careful not to clip him by mistake.

The hair started to itch around Jerrett’s neck.

In this picture Jerrett is really uncomfortable. The barber has the electric razor trimming the hair on his neck. This is the first time he ever experienced this.

The happy ending and the “after” picture showing off his new haircut. The barber let Jerrett brush his pant leg so that in return the barber could clean the hair off of Jerrett.

This is a photo story from the New York Times online. I really like their photo blog and this particular story really interested me.  As it says on the website, this story was done by Brenda Ann Kenneally.  It’s about five girls “coming of age” while pregnant, troubled and living in poverty.  The photo story takes you right into their homes to visually grab a hold of your heart.  It’s a collection of really eye opening photos.

I love photo stories like this that really take something such as teen pregnancy and show what it’s truly like for many people.  The emotions captured in these photos are ones that many people don’t know how to read or express when they’re happening, but once they’re captured by a camera lens, suddenly it gives people the opportunity to study them and understand what’s really going on.

By far this photo story is technically not a photo story in the sense that it tells a story about a paticular event. Nevertheless it’s a photo story because it is comprised of 15 photos that tell a story. Some are disturbing, some are rejoicing, yet all are interesting. What’s most compelling, they all happened within a week’s time. For that these photos share a common ground. It fascinates me to take a look into the lives of others, and to think, this all happen around the world in such a short frame of time. Especially, when the hype of the news fades and I slip back into my world, not giving enough thought to what just happen–in Haiti. These photos remind me that there different lives we are living around the same time people around the world with different experiences . In one photo A man prepares to tak dip in the icy Ob River in Russia, celebrating the Orthodox Epiphany celebration, which Orthodox Christians take an annual swim in belief that this act will cleanse them of sin and protect their health. And then later in the week on the opposite side of the world a boy raises both arms above his head, after being was rescued from ruins in Haiti.

Growing up a Barbie fanatic, the 11.5 inch doll has left me with some unforgettable memories of my childhood. From the colors, to the clothes, to the makeup, Barbie has it all. I chose the MSNBC photo story covering Barbie’s 50th anniversary honored during New York City’s Fashion Week this past fall. Many designers consider the doll a “style icon,” and the photographs displayed defend this idea profoundly. The first picture shows a model at the back of a runway with the Barbie logo displayed proudly on the backdrop behind her. The brightly lit pink sparkly runway made me reminisce the days I’d get to rip open a brand new Barbie box. The photo story incorporates not only the models on the runway, but close ups of spectators such as supermodel, Heidi Klum, awaiting the show to begin. Make up artists dolling up little girls and models give a “behind the scenes” feel to the show. A close up profile shot of a model wearing oversized eye lashes and applying bright pink lipstick, gave me the vibe that Barbie had come to life.

The story was creative as it alternated between models walking down the runway, behind the scenes shots, and clever pictures focused on a specific element in the picture. After a few runway shots, I felt the predictability of the photo story sink in… until I clicked to the next photograph. A close up shot of a model’s face elaborated with the most extravagant purple makeup was overshadowed by part of a purple portrait behind her. The drama in both her eyes and the portraits eyes made for a very effective and unexpected picture. The story came to a full circle ending with a closing shot of a “Barbie” and “Ken” model holding hands as they walk the runway, reunited once again.

I love animals, especially dogs, so I decided to choose a photo story about puppy mills. I used to go to school for Vet Tech and it opened my eyes to the horrors of puppy mills, and the support they have from so many people who but dogs at pet stores. A lot of people hear how bad the puppy mills are, but images of the bad living conditions and being able to see how unhealthy and run down these dogs look really puts the reality into perspective. I liked the collaboration of different scenes and the text Also I liked how the protesters were happy and the pictures were brighter, compared to the dogs and the puppy mills which were just darker and more depressing.

The text helped the uninformed know a little bit more about the mills than the pictures could tell. The sound helped to set up the right type of emotion expected from veiwing a puppy mill. Most importantly the pictures truely told a story. In the beginning it showed the protesters, some with their dogs, next it shows some pictures of rescued dogs, and last it shows the conditions of the puppy mills. All of the pictures were not necessarily consistent with the basis of a story, as in it did not show a series of events. However the pictures did show a protest over a pet store which improved the puppy mills business. By adding images of the rescued dogs in bad condition and the actual mills, it portrayed an image of what the protesters were fighting for. To me that add-on of the story was a great way to elaborate on the story and even convey a broader message.
